Trade between the UAE and Taiwan is expected to expand 7.4 per cent to $7.2 billion (Dh26.42 billion) in 2014 compared to $6.7 billion (Dh24.6 billion) in the previous year, a senior Taiwanese official in Dubai said.

Shyh Perng Chang, Director of Taiwan Trade Centre in Dubai, said bilateral trade between the two countries grew on average 2-3 per cent. Chang expects trade to grow faster this year – thanks to a number of trade exhibitions organised by the Taiwanese trade body in the UAE, 18 trade delegations coming to the emirates and the growing economies of the two countries.

Taiwan exports to UAE totalled $1.7 billion (Dh6.24 billion) last year while Taiwan imports to UAE were around $5 billion (Dh18.35 billion).

Chang was speaking to mark the ‘Taiwan Excellence Days” exhibition in Dubai where a number of Taiwanese companies including Asus, HTC, Karma, Tysso, D-Link, Aver, Sapido, Oright and Dray-Tek took part in the expo.

“We had around $6.7b trade last year and it’s increasing at a stable rate of 2-3 per cent annually. We expect more than $7.2b trade this year as this promotion is expected to have some good results,” he said.

The UAE's foreign trade grew at an average rate of 12.6 per cent during the last three years to reach more than $290 billion (Dh1.06 trillion) at the end of 2013.

Major exports from Taiwan to UAE were electronics, auto spare parts, machinery, textiles and some accessories. While major exports from UAE to Taiwan were oil, gas and aluminium.

Chang said the purpose of such exhibitions is to enhance Taiwan brand as Automechanika exhibition saw participation of more than 124 companies.

“We have chosen 100s of Taiwnese companies and then government helps them in promoting them. We chose Dubai Mall because a large number of visitors come here but only from the UAE but from the GCC and the other countries around the world,” he added.
