Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has started work on a project to increase the efficiency and reliability of water transmission networks in different parts of Dubai, said a press statement on Thursday.

The project will provide an infrastructure capable of meeting all requirements for development, including the supply, installation and testing of surge protection devices in 13 water pumping and transmission stations in areas such as Jebel Ali, Mushrif, and Hatta.

The total cost of the project is Dh65 million, Dewa said.

"The project supports Dewa’s strategic plan to raise the efficiency and reliability of its water networks. It is one of the various development projects to raise efficiency, reliability, and operational capacity of water networks in Dubai to improve the sustainable development of the Emirate. The project involves installing systems that protect the network in the event of sudden power outages in pumping stations, which results in different water pressures across the network. This causes leaks and malfunctions in the main water network," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa.

"This system absorbs the variations in the water pressure in the network through special devices installed in the pumping stations to provide the necessary protection. The project is expected to be completed by June 2016," added Al Tayer.
