You may not soon be able to chat with your Facebook friends from your Facebook app on your iPhone and Android.

According to reports, Facebook plans to delink messenger from the main app, thereby forcing people to download the separate mobile messenger app that it launched in 2011 and updated it in a major way last year.

A report by Verge said the idea to delink messenger from iOS and Android mobile phones is aimed at creating better experience for users.

The report hints at a possibility of Facebook soon introducing more features like the free voice calls it recently introduced.

A Wall Street Journal report quoting a Facebook representative said is aimed at getting more users to start using the messenger app as the company plans to release more such standalone apps. Recently Facebook purchased popular messenger app WhatsApp for $19 billion.

However those using the Facebook app on Windows and tablets will be able to continue to enjoy the messenger from within the main app.

Last month Facebook rolled out several more updates with the version 4.1 introducing the ability to create groups and message forwarding.
