The tablet, smartphone is threatening to overheat with new launch dates and new products being announced every other day.

While Samsung and Apple are leading the charge, Google and Microsoft have raised the stakes for all.

The latest news on online fora, quoting Bloomberg, is that Apple will release a smaller version of the iPad in time for the 2012 holiday season.

While the report did not specify which “holiday season”, tech blogs, quoting Bloomberg, said the newest iPad would feature a screen measuring between seven and eight inches — down from the standard 9.7-inch screen of the previous three versions.

The report also stated it would not feature the retina display introduced with the latest iPad.

Microsoft and Google have both announced upcoming devices aimed at the growing tablet market, which perhaps has forced Apple to show its hand.

Microsoft has shown its Surface tablet while Google introduced the Nexus 7 tablet, which will run on Jelly Bean, the latest version of the Android operating system.

A smaller iPad could also target Amazon’s Kindle Fire.
