A study for a new 25km causeway linking Saudi Arabia with nearby Bahrain will be completed within three months, the president of the Saudi Railways Organisation (SRO) was quoted on Tuesday as saying.

Mohammed Al Suwaiket said the King Hamad Causeway, named after Bahrain’s monarch, would involve the construction of two rail lanes for cargo and passengers.

He told the Saudi Arabic language daily 'Al Madina; that the rail on the causeway which was approved by the two Gulf neighbors would be connected to the train service between the Saudi capital Riyadh and the eastern port of Dammam, where the bridge will emanate next to the existing King Fahd Causeway.

“The (King Hamad) causeway project is still in the study stage and we expect it to be completed within three months,” Suwaiket said.

The paper also quoted him as saying most of the new projects to be executed by the government-owned SRO would be within the 2,170-km rail network linking the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

He said designs for the 663km Saudi part of the GCC rail would be awarded to local and global firms shortly.
