16-member gang of cable thieves held

A 16-member Asian gang, which specialised in stealing electric cables across the UAE, was busted in Ras Al Khaimah recently.

Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Investigation Department, which arrested the gang red handed before committing their latest theft, is searching for the group’s leader.

Lt. Col. Abdullah Ali, Director-General of RAK CID, said police had received information that the gang is planning to steal cables worth millions of dirhams from a construction site in the emirate.

“Based on this information, we assigned a team to collect more details and started monitoring the site. We arrested the gang red-handed while they were trying to steal the cables. A Special Forces team of RAK Police and the Air Wing were involved in the operation,” he said.

He added some of the gang’s members were illegal residents.
 
“We also confiscated different tools used for cutting the cables and transporting it outside the emirate to sell them,” Lt. Col. Abdullah Ali said.
