A Ghanaian visitor allegedly smuggled more than 2kg of the narcotic methamphetamine in a hidden pocket at the bottom of her handbag.

On her arrival at Dubai International Airport, an officer suspected the abnormal thickness of the handbag of SO, 45.

Checking the bag, 2.067kg of methamphetamine was found.

When confronted with the drug, SO initially denied knowing anything about them and claimed that a friend had given her the bag as a gift in Ghana.

She later admitted that a man in her country had given her the handbag and asked her to hand it over to a compatriot working in the UAE whose phone number she did not know.

Police arranged with the woman to drag the local man into the net.

A hotel room was booked for her and she called her friend back home, telling him that she is ready to hand over the handbag.

Police accompanied the woman to the hotel room and while they were there, she received a call from a local number. The man asked her about the hotel’s location and she was talking in a language that policemen did not understand. After finishing the call, she said she was giving him details about the hotel’s location.

The man knocked at the door and the two spoke for some time at the door before he got into the room and was arrested.

KO, 40, mechanic, denied any knowledge about the handbag and the drugs and claimed that he came only to change SO’s hotel booking because it was expensive for her.

The woman had later refuted the claim of the mechanic and told prosecutors that he had come to collect the drugs and not to change her hotel booking.

The woman was referred to the court for smuggling and possessing 2.067kg of methamphetamine and the man was accused of criminal complicity.
