After acquittal, drug dealer gets life

An appeals court in Ras Al khaimah overturned a previous court ruling to acquit an Omani man of charges of drug dealing and sentenced him to life in prison.

The court also ordered the deportation of the 37-year-old defendant after he was convicted of smuggling nearly three kg of hashish from Dubai.

A court of first instance had acquitted the defendant after he denied the charges by claiming he did not know the contents of the bag given to him by an unidentified person in Dubai to deliver it to another one in RAK.

“He told court that he knew the bag contained hashish only after he was arrested by police who stopped his car on his way to RAK,” Emirat Alyoum daily said.
