Police foiled an attempt to steal scaffolding and steel scrap from a construction site in Al Khawaneej area, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Two guards of the site, MA and MS, agreed to sell scaffolding bars and some steel scrap to AM.

On a Friday at around 6pm, a police patrol suspected a pickup vehicle and three workers who were loading it with steel bars.

When policemen approached them, one of the guards fled the scene.

MA admitted that he had sold the steel bars for Dh1,000.

The guard told police that one day, scrap dealer MS had visited the site and asked them to call him if they wished to sell any scrap material.

The two guards agreed to sell scaffoldings of their employer , called the scrap dealer and asked him to come.

The employer of the buyer and the pickup driver denied any knowledge about the deal. He said that usually he signs a deal with the seller and scrap are loaded under his supervision and after presenting an invoice.

“The driver has been working in my company for more than a year. He usually accompanies me after concluding a deal with a seller to load scrap in the pickup. I did not know that he had distributed the company’s business card to sites in Al Khawaneej area. He also worked on Friday which was his off day,” AG, 44, Pakistani scrap dealer told investigators.

The arrested guards and the pickup driver were referred to the court, accused of theft. In May last year, the two were sentenced to three months in jail each. They were also ordered to be deported after serving their jail term.

Later police arrested the second guard AM, 26, Bangladeshi, who had remained at large since the incident.

AM admitted to the charge and the court will give its verdict on May 24.
