A court in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain sentenced three men to between 17 and 19 years in jail after they were convicted of abducting an Emirati man from his home and torturing him at a deserted place.

One defendant was sentenced to 19 years and fined Dh100,000 while the two others got 17 years and ordered to pay Dh100,000 damages to the Emirati.

The court also ordered the deportation of an expatriate defendant, according to the semi official daily Alittihad.

The three were accused in May of kidnapping the Emirati from his house in Al Ain and taking him to a desert place.

The Emirati recognized one of them as his ex-wife’s brother and tried to resist, but they hit him and blindfolded him before bundling him in their car.

They took him to a desolate area between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, where they stripped him off and filmed him with their mobile phones before beating him up, stinging his hands with lit cigarettes and scratching his back with knives.

After he was left on his own with one captor inside a deserted house, he managed to flee and walked nearly six km in the desert until he reached a farm, where he told its owners to phone the police.

Police later seized the three and all of them confessed to the kidnapping and stealing of the man’s money, jewelry, mobile phones and documents.

“The three, all in their 20s, were charged with kidnapping, using violence, carrying out indecent acts, burglary and taking drugs,” police said.
