Couple registers kid under brother’s name...

An Iraqi man and his wife allegedly registered their daughter under the name of woman’s mentally-retarded brother in order to hide their marriage from the man’s first wife, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Thursday.

Both the woman and her mentally-retarded brother are adopted children of an Emirati family.

The young woman and her Iraqi husband allegedly forged marriage contract as well.

Since both of them are adopted and don’t carry the family’s name, using the forged marriage contract and the birth certificate for registering the new-brown girl did not attract any suspicions to the authorities.

The incident happened on February 5, 2012, when MI, 25, student, gave birth to her daughter at Zulekha Hospital.

Recently, AA, 21, the young woman’s sister, revealed the crime and lodged a complaint with the police about it.

“MI is my adopted sister. She is married to NA, Iraqi, 34, and they had a baby girl in Zulekha Hospital on February 5, 2012. She gave her daughter the name of my mentally-retarded brother, HA, who is also my brother by adoption. My sister’s Iraqi husband was in the country when that happened and he knows that the girl is his daughter,” testified the sister.

When confronted, MI admitted to forging her daughter’s birth certificate.

“Her father and I did that because his first wife does not know about our marriage. And it was difficult for him to issue documents from his country’s embassy also,” admitted MI.

The court will reconvene on August 11.
