Three Pakistanis were sentenced to six months in jail for forging a flat ownership certificate, placing an advertisement for the flat on dubizzle.com and swindled Dh18,660 out of a tenant.

The Dubai Criminal Court also ordered deportation of OY,21, sales executive, OM, 22, sales representative, AA, 25, worker, after serving their jail term.

According to the records, the three had agreed on conning a prospective tenant by forging property ownership certificates and leases.

“We were searching for a flat already advertised for rent and we found one in the Gardens in Jebel Ali. We advertised the flat on dubizzle.com  after forging an ownership certificate in the name of AA,” a member of the gang confessed.

BR, 42, Indian civil engineer was searching for a flat and he found the advertisement on the website. He called the given number on October 4.

“OM answered the call and I agreed with him for the viewing. He only guided me to the location and I went there and saw the flat which I liked and decided to rent it. I called after that and he agreed to meet me in Ibn Battuta mall at around 7pm. We met in a coffee shop and discussed the rent which was Dh44,000 that should be paid in four installments Dh11,000 each.

“He asked me to pay Dh3,000 for booking the flat which I did. He issued me a receipt for that. As he claimed he is a broker, he asked me to pay him a total of Dh3,500. I paid him Dh1,750 as half of his commission for which he did not issue any receipt. He told me that I should pay Dh1,160 for water and electricity connection.

“On the following day he submitted a lease signed by the so-called owner AA and I signed on it as a tenant, paid him the first installment, Dh1,700 as his commission, and Dh1,160 as water and electricity connection fees and issued him other three cheques, and he issued me a receipt of Dh13,860,” testified the victim.

Ten days later, the victim discovered that he had been swindled and  he complained to the police, but the records did not mention how police arrested the accused who admitted to their crime.
