Dubai Police arrested five Asian men trying to sell nearly 60 cars mortgaged for banks for just Dh10,000 each, after the manager of a car rental firm, which owns those vehicles fled the country following financial problems.

The five told police they were asked by the fleeing company owner to get him Dh5,000 for each vehicle, all 2013 and 2014 models, and keep the rest of the money for themselves.

They said they sold some of the cars for Dh10,000 each and were trying to market the rest, although all of them were mortgaged with various banks.

Police said the unnamed owner left only the keys for those cars and that the five defendants concealed the vehicles in different areas in Dubai and other emirates.

“They were asking for Dh10,000 for each because they have no documents with them. The only had the keys,” Emarat Al Youm daily said, quoting Dubai CID chief Major General Khalil Al Mansouri.

He said a police official working undercover posed as a customer, which led to the arrest of the five and that 43 cars had been recovered so far. He said the five could not remember where they had hidden the remaining vehicles.

“As for the fleeing owner, we will try to bring him to justice because he has implicated himself in a crime which is far bigger than his financial problems,” said Al Mansouri.
