Endangered birds, animals seized at border

UAE customs authorities seized 139 endangered birds and animals hidden inside a truck driven by a man from a nearby Gulf country as he tried to smuggle them through Guweifat border crossing.

The creatures included flamingoes and other endangered species while four monkeys were also found concealed under the seats.

Customs men conducting random inspection of cars entering the UAE through Guweifat from Saudi Arabia and Qatar had suspected the truck just after it was inside the UAE territory.

“When they searched the truck, they found the endangered birds and animals which the man tried to smuggle them into the UAE,” the semi official daily Alittihad said, adding that they were all impounded.
