A transport company official allegedly asked for Dh700 as bribe from a taxi driver to complete accommodation formalities, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

SM, 39, Egyptian, was responsible of taxi driver accommodation. The driver, SF, approached the employee after he found private accommodation and so did not want to continue living in company accommodation. The employer was to pay Dh400 to the driver as accommodation allowance.

The driver supplied the employee with all needed documents to switch from company accommodation to private accommodation.

The employee then started delaying the application and after about a month from submission he told SF that the administration had turned it down.

“However, if you pay me Dh700, I can get the work done for you with the help of another staff,” the accommodation employee told the driver.

The driver reported it to the company’s legal affairs department and senior officials lodged an official complaint with the police. Police then asked the driver to go ahead with the employee and gave him with Dh700 after taking a photocopy of the currency notes.

After setting a meeting with the employee through the driver, police arrested SM red handed with the police notes in his wallet.

The employee, however, denied taking bribe and claimed that he had only borrowed the amount from the driver.

The court will reconvene on January 8.
