Hotel, restaurant managers cleared in party poisoning, chef guilty

A court in Dubai has cleared the managers of a local hotel and a floating restaurant of charges of causing a mass food poisoning at a company party in the emirate.

But the court found a hotel chef guilty of causing the poisoning of 12 people and sentenced him to three months in prison. It also fined him Dh10,000.

The court said its sentence was based on the fact that the hotel manager is not responsible for the kitchen and that cooking and storage of foodstuffs is the sole responsibility of the cooks.

It also cleared the restaurant manager of any charges since the food for the party was supplied by the hotel.
