Housewife assaults maid with iron bar

Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday heard a case of a housewife allegedly defaulting on her maid’s salary and assaulting her with an iron bar.

The 34-year-old Emirati housewife allegedly assaulted the 22-year-old Indian maid for over a month leaving the latter with 60 per cent permanent disability, the court heard.

The incident came to light when the accused called police requesting for an ambulance. She told cops that the maid had fainted.

However, police found the maid in the balcony and investigations revealed that the she had been languishing in the balcony for two days, after the accused had closed the door on her.

She was transferred to Rashid Hospital with several bruises all over her body. Medical reports confirmed that she was physically assaulted and had fractures on her wrist, hand and face, leading to 60 per cent permanent disability, testified a police officer, who arrested the accused.

The officer said he found food residues and human waste in the balcony, which proves the maid had been living in the balcony for some time.

During interrogation the accused told police that the maid requested to be returned to her home country soon after joining work. And the accused declined her request and asked her to work until the end of the contract but the maid refused.

The maid, meanwhile, said that she had requested to return to her home country after the accused refused to pay her monthly salary.
