A jobless Afghani attempted to steal Dh180,000 from a bank customer after chasing him into an isolated place, the Dubai Criminal Court was told on Monday.

On March 15 at around 10.20am, IA, 38, an Iraqi investor, went to a bank in Bani Yas Street to encash a cheque of Dh180,000.

“I collected the amount and walked out of the bank. When I went into an isolated area, someone pushed me from behind and snatched the envelope. Me and a resident of area ran after him,” said the victim.

MJ, 33, Bangladeshi, a shop worker, was standing outside when he heard the victim shouting for help.

“I saw a man trying to catch another, who was carrying a white envelop in his hand. But he threw the envelope on the ground. I also chased the man and helped catch the man until police arrived,” said the worker.

The victim picked up the envelope, which contained cash withdrawn from the bank.

Another pedestrian, who was also a resident of the same area, testified that he heard the victim calling for help while he was running after the accused.

“I rushed to help and catch the accused until the police arrived,” testified MN, 35, a Pakistani worker.

The court will reconvene on May 26.
