A Sudanese man has been accused of kidnapping a woman he loved and threatened to kill her, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The victim, 30-year-old NH from Algeria is a security guard and testified knowing sales executive MS, 34, through a mutual friend.

"We exchanged mobile number and our relationship developed to friendship. He used to pick me up from my work place sometimes. I also borrowed money from him whenever needed but paid him back. A month before the incident he changed and expressed his love and proposed to marry. I refused and assured him that we were just friends,” testified the victim.

In spite of NH's refusal, he insisted on marrying her.

"He started making annoying calls and spoilt our friendship. So I asked him to stop talking to me or I would inform the police."

The woman testified that MS continued calling her which she started avoiding. He then started following her from at her house to work place and sometimes to other places.

The incident took place on December 15, 2015, at around 10pm, when the woman got out from the metro station at Ibn Battuta mall, and walked to her work place to a hotel adjacent to the mall.

At the back gate of the hotel, which is accessible to staff, the accused suddenly appeared and wanted to talk to the woman.

"I asked him to leave, or I will inform the police. He pulled a knife from his jacket and pushed me towards the wall. He placed the knife on my neck and asked me to accompany him to his car. He threatened to kill me if I refused."

The woman was scared and followed his instruction. He pushed her into his car and locked the door before stepping to the driver's seat.

He drove into internal streets and threatened to kill if she does not accept his marriage proposal.

He then suddenly stopped the car, as a result the knife slipped from his hand and his mobile fell from his pocket.

He stepped out of the car to look for his belongings.

Seizing the opportunity, the victim picked the knife and threw it from the slightly opened window without him noticing.

The accused could not open the car's door next to the victim because of steel barriers on the roadside.

He got into the car again, angry for losing his mobile before starting to shout at her and asking her to marry him.

"I pretended to accept his proposal and calmed him down. Then I asked him to drive me to my work place. I told him that from now on, I would answer his calls and would not break the relationship with him," said the victim who immediate lodged a complaint with the police as he dropped her back.

The court will reconvene on August 30.
