The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced a Bangladeshi worker to seven years in prison for premeditatedly killing his housemate over job dismissal.  The court also ordered EA, 37, to be deported after serving his jail term.

The convict's co-worker and compatriot, MH, 46, had testified before the court that a fight over job dismissal broke out prior to the knife attack. He told the court that on February 27, at around 8pm, MH, 46, Bangladeshi, returned to the old-style house near Port Saeed which he shared with co-workers.

"As I entered the house, EA and the victim, were in a heated argument. I intervened and asked both to stop and since the victim was my roommate, I asked him to go out of the house until the latter calmed down. The victim did not leave the house but stayed in our room. I changed my clothes and left for the kitchen to prepare food. The accused then came to the kitchen complaining about the victim. He claimed that the victim had offered him a job and, after a couple of days, had dismissed him.

“The victim came out of the room and started defending himself and the two resumed their quarrel. While I was having food, a boy came to me and told me that EA had attacked the victim and run away. I rushed out and saw the victim on the floor bleeding. I asked him who did it but he could not answer,” MH told the jury.

Driver, MA, 40, Pakistani, who lived in the same house, told the jury that at around 10pm while he was chatting with friends in his room, he heard his Bangladeshi housemates quarrelling outside.

“I used to hear them fight all the time, so I did not pay attention.  Later, my friend and I decided to go out for a walk. I opened my room's door and saw the victim walking towards the wash basin and the accused following him. The two were fighting with their fists. I saw the accused hitting the victim and running away. I did not see if there was a knife in his hand. However, the victim ran after him for about three steps before he fell. I rushed closer and saw a knife near the victim’s body,” the driver told the jury. Answering the judge’s question, the driver said that the accused is stronger than the victim.

According to the records, the driver ran after the accused until he got tired and gave up. He then returned to the accommodation where police had already reached.

On the following day, the accused was arrested in coordination with Sharjah police.

Promotion job

The accused claimed that he had been beaten by the victim and another man on the day of the incident.

“The victim had offered me a job of distributing promotional stickers of a massage centre against Dh2,500 monthly salary. I took up the job and moved to stay with him in the same house. After about 25 days he gave me Dh1,500 and told me that I was dismissed.

“On the day of the incident at around 7pm, he asked me to accompany him to a building, saying he will offer me a job.

“When we reached to the building, he and another man assaulted me but I ran away from them and went to the house. When he returned home, I started asking him why he had dismissed me from the first job and a quarrel started between us. He was standing near the wash basin when I came to him and asked him why he had sacked me. He turned back to me and held my neck, so I stabbed him with a knife that I was holding,” admitted the accused.

Forensic reported that AR, Bangladeshi, died of a deep stab that reached the internal cavity and caused a cut in the heart muscle and the liver. The fatal stab caused internal and external bleeding.
