A Bangladeshi with other two fugitives allegedly attacked a pedestrian after asking him for a cigarette lighter and attempted to rob him, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

On July 20 at around 10pm, the victim SH, 29, Pakistani, was walking on a lane in Fareej Al Marrar area, when a man approached him and asked for a lighter.

“After giving him the lighter, two men came from behind and attacked me. The one in front of me bent down, picked up a piece of brick and hit me on my head and body.

“I resisted them although they tore off my shirt’s pocket while attempting to rob me. Dh3,000 that was in my pocket fell out but I manage to pick up the money. The attackers also tried to steal my wallet but I succeeded in preventing it. The attackers ran away and I chased one of them, grabbed him and held him until police arrived,” said the victim.

Police arrived and arrested MN, 31.

The victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment of wounds on his lips and head.

The court will give its verdict on September 9.
