A maid asked her sponsor to cancel her visa after she allegedly stole jewellery and electronics items from his house, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

KR, 25, is accused of stealing jewellery worth Dh25,000, about Dh2,000 in cash, an iPod. When she fled from the house with her passport quietly, she left the main door wide open even as her employer and his daughter were in the living room watching TV.

“She came to give back Dh100 that my wife had lent her. I asked her to keep the note with her until my wife returned from work. As she was preparing dinner for my daughter, she shut the door in the living room. I did not suspect that she might flee. I thought she did not want the cooking smell to get into the living room,” testified FN, 41, Indian General Manager.

His wife OF, 33, an executive manager came back home from work at around 6pm and was stuned to see the main door open. “I called the maid but there was no response. I searched for her in her room but it seemed that she had taken all her belongings. Upon searching my bedroom, I found that my jewellery, cash, her passport and an iPod were missing.

"She called me later and asked me to cancel her visa and to meet her. She also admitted her crime and promised to send me back the gold once she reached her home country,” testified the victim.

Police arrested the maid. The Court will issue its verdict on July 31.
