Maid disembarked from flight with loot, sent to jail

An Ethiopian maid who attempted fleeing after stealing Dh29,500 in cash and jewellery worth more than Dh7,00 from her employer has been sentenced by  Dubai Criminal Court to three months imprisonment followed by deportation.

She was arrested from a plane while attempting to exit the country with the loot.

Aysha Obaid, 60, Emirati housewife, testified that on August 8, at around 4pm she went out shopping. On her return she found the maid KBI, 30, missing.

She immediately checked the safe and found her passport, Dh29,500 in cash, two gold necklaces worth Dh7,500 and a ring worth Dh200 missing.

So she called her son who informed the police.

She also reported the maid as absconding with the Dubai Residency and Foreigners Affairs Department, police station, as well as with Dubai International Airport authorities.

Police arrested the maid while she was on a plane and confiscated Dh19,300 and some gold jewellery.

The accused confessed to the crime.
