A court in the western Abu Dhabi town of Dhafra sentenced an Asian housemaid to five years in prison after she was convicted of trying to steal her employer’s jewellery.

The maid denied the charges, saying she was set up by her employer and his wife to prevent her from quitting them and returning to her home country.

The maid admitted that she went into her employer’s room as she was shown in a hidden camera, but insisted that she was told so by her employer’s wife.

“The maid told court that her employer’s wife asked her to go into her room and bring the ID card of her husband’s mother. She said the woman told her that the room’s key was next to the TV set,” 'Al Ittihad' said.

“She said that she went into the room and started pulling drawers in search for the card, adding that the camera showed her as if she was trying to steal but that she was not.”

The paper said the court rebuffed those claims and convicted the maid.
