A 23-year-old Syrian student ZMO, allegedly threatened to kill his friend and the family if he didn’t stop calling him to get his money, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Tuesday.

The victim, HH, 37, British national born in Damascus, testified that the accused visited him in March in his rent a car company in Hor Al Anz to return a car he had rented and paid the rental fees.

“Following that, our friendship grew and he convinced me that his father owns properties in Abu Dhabi and invited me to become a partner with him in the business. He proposed buying diesel and reselling it at higher price and then dividing profits among us. He also claimed that his father’s partner will provide the diesel. I agreed and after few days the accused and a Pakistani called FA failed to pay me the profit. Ten days later I asked the money and instead I received an SMS from a new number threatening to hurt me and my family should I claim the money again.

“The accused was convicted guilty and was awarded six months in jail followed by deportation; he appealed the sentence and the court of upheld the verdict. So I applied for a Civil Right Case. I lodged a complaint with Al Muraqqabat Police Station regarding the SMS threat,” he testified.

The victim also charged that the accused had verbally and over the phone threatened to kill him if he called him again to ask the money.

“I got scared and I sent my wife and children back home because the co-swindler is a Pakistani and I have Pakistani workers in my company,” he testified.

Police found that the mobile number used to send message belonged to the accused.

The accused is serving a jail term in another case in Sharjah. The court will reconvene on December 9.
