More than 500 maids flee to prostitution

Most of the housemaids in Sharjah who fled from their sponsors engage in prostitution, according to an official.

Media reports quoted Rashid Ali Majed Al Omran, Chief Prosecutor, Sharjah, as saying that a total of 518 such cases were handled by prosecutors in Sharjah.

He added that women from Asian and African countries entered the country on maid visas to work as prostitutes.

All the women nabbed are recommended to be deported, he said.

Usually such women work ingroups. The prosecutors also handled about 10 cases of human trafficking, involving domestic helps and young girls.
