Sharjah police arrested six African men accused of robbing shops in the emirate by breaking their doors at night and stealing cash.

Police said the six Africans “violently” resisted arrest and tried to flee but were all brought under control and captured.

Police launched a manhunt for the thieves after receiving reports about burglaries from many shops in the city and the industrial zone.

One operation involved beating the guard at a scrap shop in the industrial zone and stealing all the money in the cash machine.

“Investigations led to the arrest of an African taxi driver suspected of knowing those six. During questioning, he confessed that he was driving them to the targeted place,” the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm said.

It quoted police as saying police raided their two apartments in the emirate and found that they were living with 31 African women, most of whom were staying illegally in the UAE or have absconded from their employers.
