A 34-year-old Georgian visitor, who was found guilty of theft from a flat and attempting to smuggle gold jewellery in a bicycle through the airport, is being prosecuted for burgling another house.

AG is accused by the Prosecution of stealing golden jewellery worth Dh68,100 in addition to Dh4,000 and $700 in cash on June 23, 2012.

The victim testified that when she returned home she found the lock of her house broken and gold jewellery missing from her wardrobe.

Police arrested AG when he was trying to leave the country via Dubai International Airport. Corporal Omar Saif found gold hidden in a bicycle when it was scanned at airport security.

“The passenger admitted that the new bicycle which was in its box belonged to him. However, he denied hiding the jewellery in the bicycle’s chassis,” testified the officer.

AG was given three years in jail followed by deportation by the Criminal Court of First Instance last November that was later upheld by the Appeal Court for the first theft case.

For the new case, the court will reconvene on April 14.
