Two rob bank in name of Emirati businessman

An Emirati businessman from Ajman has just returned home from a business trip abroad in 2009 when he received a phone call from the police. When he went to the station, he was told that over Dh900,000 had been embezzled from  a local bank through an account in his name.

Nassir Ali Khamis Al Mukhaini, 36, was stunned as he had never opened an account with a conventional bank since he deals only with Islamic banks.

Police who seized the two suspects, a man and a woman working at the bank, let Mukhaini see them but he told police he had never seen the two before.

What puzzled him is how the two managed to obtain a copy of his passport to use it in opening the account and swindling that sum.

“I proved to police that I was on a business trip abroad when the account was opened at this bank,” he told Albayan newspaper.

“I was surprised because I was not here at the date of the account opening…I am a businessman with many companies employing more than 300 people but all my dealings are with Islamic banks in the country.”

The paper said Mukhaini had been trapped in a legal battle for nearly three years before those two were charged.

“I am still suffering because of this case which has seriously hurt my image and kept me shuttling in courts and prosecution offices,” he said.
