UAE authorities accused some car dealers of cheating clients by selling them old tyres as new in violation of laws pertaining to the protection of consumers.

The Ministry of Economy said it had fined some tyre shops Dh100,000 for selling used tyres in defiance of a new consumer protection law banning the sale of old tyres given their danger to human life.

“Some car dealers are replacing the frames of tyres imported as new with old tyres imported 12 to 14 months ago,” the Arabic language daily Al Ittihad said, quoting Hashim al Nuaimi, consumer protection director.

He said the Ministry would meet with car agencies and tyre dealers next week to discuss measures to curb malpractices.
