Saudi desert rangers finally found the bodies of three local men who went missing nearly a month ago in the Empty Quarter desert while on their way home from the UAE, a newspaper in the Gulf Kingdom said on Wednesday.

More than 140 land police patrols have taken part in the search operation which also involved helicopters and reconnaissance planes in an area covering over 140,000 square km, nearly double the UAE’s size.

The three unnamed men had crossed Albataha border point after visiting the UAE and headed for their homes nearly 600 km across the desert.

Relatives had reported the three men missing after they lost contact with them a day after they entered the Empty Quarter, the world’s most barren desert.

“We have been searching for them for nearly a month in coordination with the border guards in the UAE and Oman….they were all found dead as it was a difficult search given the rugged terrain and difficult topography of Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter),” police spokesman in the eastern province Brigadier Mohammed Al Gamdi said, quoted by Arar newspaper.
