19-year-old girl raped, distressed takes life

A 19-year-old girl had been raped by three men, at the Yakkarai Cemetery in Thunnalai, Jaffna, Nelliyadi Police said .

The victim, a resident of Thenmaratchi-Varani, had gone to the Vallipuram Alvaar Temple in Vadamarachchi with a male friend from the same village. According to the police, she and her friend had been intercepted by three men while returning from the temple. The men had attacked her friend and had dragged her to the Yakkarai Cemetery where she was raped.

The police added that her friend, who had been attacked, had informed the Nelliyadi Police.

Police had admitted the victim and her friend to the Manthikai Base Hospital.

The police found the wallet of one of the rapists in the cemetery and he has been identified. Police said they are carrying out further investigations.

The victim has been transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for further treatment. The incident had taken place on Friday (7).
 
Distressed teacher takes her life

A 35-year-old teacher and mother of a three-year-old girl committed suicide in the early hours of yesterday by setting herself on fire after dousing the body with petrol under a coconut palm in her backyard.

 Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Ajith Rohana told The Island that the victim, Warushanperuma Kulathilake Attanayake Mudiyanselage Yamuna Priyadharshani of Alaluwa, Tarahitimulla in the Kuliyapitiya police area, had killed herself between 1.00 a.m. and 5.00 a.m..

 Headquarters Inspector, Chief Inspector Ashoka Gunasekara said the victim had been overwhelmed by depression according to the four statements recorded by the police from the victim’s husband, her parents and sister-in-law.

The Kuliyapitiya Magistrate visited the scene where she committed suicide. The body was taken to the Kuliyapitiya hospital for the postmortem last afternoon.

SLBE not responsible for inappropriate visas
 
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) t requested the public to refrain from going for employment in the Middle East or elsewhere using tourist visa, as the bureau will not take any responsibility for those who do so reports Ada Derana.
 
The Foreign Employment Bureau says that information has been uncovered regarding an illegal racket which deploys women for employment in countries such as Saudi Arabia, through Dubai and India using tourist visas.
 
These profiteers have sent Sri Lankans for employment in Saudi through sub agents by avoiding basic training required for foreign employment, family background reports and other documents.
 
The bureau also urged the public to report any information regarding such human smugglers by calling the hotline No. 011-2879900.

21,750 kg of expired coriander powder confiscated

 
Workers at a food preparation centre on Shivananda Road, Kotahena, which was raided by the officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), yesterday, found to be using expired coriander powder to manufacture curry powder.
 
The officers confiscated 21,750 kg of the expired and discolored coriander powder. It also had fungus. The entire stock was valued at Rs 3.5 million. Investigations also revealed that the owners of the centre had already sold a part of the curry powder, which had been mixed with the expired coriander powder, to traders.

The raid was carried out through a tip-off received via the CAA hotline.

More than 300 Facebook accounts blocked

A senior Information Security Engineer of Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (Sri Lanka CERT) Roshan Chandragupta told that they have blocked over 300 Facebook accounts which were used to embarrass and harm the reputation of numerous people.

He also told that Sri Lanka CERT has received complaints about over 3000 such Facebook accounts and the blocking of these 300 accounts were a result of further investigating into those complaints.

Most of these complaints had been made by school students and artistes for using their photos and creating fake Facebook accounts.
