Man accused of raping 83-year-old woman

Colombo - A 35-year-old suspect, said to travel from village to village performing dances, and named Jalliya, has been taken into custody by the police in connection with an incident where an 83-year-old woman living in an isolated house in Pahala Thibbotuwawa in Weerambugedera, has been raped.

Police said a complaint had been made at the Weerambugedera Police Station subsequent by the daughter of the victim after she was informed about the incident.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Senerath Egodawela, in charge of the Weerambugedera area, dispatched two special police teams to Dambulla and Girandurukotte and arrested the suspect in the village of Thibbotuwawa in Girandurukotte.

Police said the 83-year-old woman was admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for medical examination.
The Weerambugedera Police are carrying out further investigations.
