A young man, from Kurundankulama in Anuradhapura, has been admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital by area people when he attempted to commit suicide by pouring petrol over his body and igniting on Monday (31) afternoon, ‘Lakbima’ reported.

The 23-year-old young man, a resident of Nisala Avenue, Matale Junction, Anuradhapura, had tried to start a love affair with a young woman from the same area and failing which he had attempted to commit suicide.

He had gone with a friend on a motorbike to a petrol station where he bought one-and-half-a-litre petrol and leaving his friend there he had come to Kurundankulama junction.

As he watched the young woman nearing the junction after attending a funeral house, he had poured gasoline over his body in front of her and lighted.

The area people, who hurried to the victim at once, had put out the fire by taking away the clothes and brought him to the hospital where he is being treated for burns on his face, chest and hair.
