Dubai Customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle eight kilograms of heroin stuffed in spare parts sent from an Asian country.

A customs inspector had became suspicious of a spare parts consignment sent in two boxes as the density of the spare parts was different when passed through an x-ray device.

The inspector made a hole in a pully and found a white powder that tests later determined to be heroin.

Omar Ahmad Al Muhairi, Chief Director of the Air Cargo Operation Department at Dubai Customs, said that drug traders kept developing their smuggling methods.

“Despite that this was a very new modus, customs inspectors have succeeded in discovering and foiling the attempt,” he said.

Al Muhairi said the spare parts were made of steel and neatly welded after been stuffed with heroin.

Dubai Customs confiscated and handed over the consignment to Dubai Police.

He said the Cargo Village’s 70 customs inspectors were continuously trained in the latest technology to prevent the entry or transit of banned materials through the emirate.

The department has foiled 14 smuggling attempts in the first half of the year; seven of which were on transit from Asian and African countries and directed to Europe via Dubai. In another seven of the cases, the drugs were bound for the emirate.

The drugs seized include hashish, opium, heroin, gat and illegal pharmaceutical medicines.
