Metro train recalled on technical glitch

A Dubai Metro train travelling from Rashidiya had to be recalled to base station following a minor glitch.

The incident occurred at around 3pm on Saturday.

According to a senior RTA spokesperson, the glitch was with a platform screen door.

“It happened between the Rashidiya and Garhoud stations. We had to bring the train back to Rashidiya and the door was manually opened and the problem has been solved,” said Peyman Younes Parham, Director of Marketing & Corporate Communications at the RTA.

The train service has been resumed since, he added.

The Metro service has been gaining ground with 23 million commuters using the service since its on September 9, 2009, according to the RTA.

In a statement released to Emirates Business, Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA, stated the number of daily users of the Metro has also increased with 130,529 passengers using the train system on July 1.

“People have started to perceive the benefits and advantages of using of public transport such as comfort in transit and reduced fuel and vehicle maintenance costs,” said Al Tayer.

“The number of Metro users is steadily on the rise with users increasing from 1.8 million passengers in October 2009 to 3.3 million in June 2010. Metro users broke the two million passengers barrier in December 2009,” said Al Tayer.

Giving a passenger breakdown per station, he said: “Khalid bin Al Waleed Station is the busiest as the

number of commuters who used the station since the start of the Metro operation reached 3,145,210, followed by Mall of the Emirates Station (3,059,069), Al Ittihad Station (2,989,879), Deira City Centre Station (2,102,484) and Al Rashidiya Station (1,829,653).
