The Dubai Criminal Court is hearing the case of a policeman accused of forging and using university certificates in a bid to get a promotion.

JAJ, 31, an Emirati policeman, is accused of forging a diploma certificate attributed to Damascus University Economy College and attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and an equation certificate attributed to the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

JAJ denied the forgery charges and claimed that his colleague, Sergeant Ahmad, had suggested that he should pursue his education with Damascus University in order to get promoted. As he was an affiliate student, Ahmad, who is now dead, arranged the examination papers and payment of fees for him throughout the four years of study, JAJ told investigators.

When he enquired about the certificate, the deceased told him that it will be sent to him by e-mail, he stated. JAJ claimed that after Ahmad’s death he managed to log into his e-mail account as he had the user name and password. He said he found the e-mail containing his certificate sent by Damascus University.

JAJ said he got it attested and submitted it to the General Administration of Traffic Department at Dubai Police in 2007. His degree was amended as per the university certificate but he was not promoted, he told the prosecution.

An employee at the human resources department of Dubai Police was alerted that JAJ had submitted forged certificates. Enquiries with Damascus University and the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research confirmed the certificates and attestation was forged.

Dubai Police submitted a complaint against JAJ on January 25 and the first hearing of the case was held on Wednesday.

The next session is scheduled for September 15 to hear witnesses.
