Facebook photos prove Vora lied: Babajee family

Obscene photos and emails are among a raft of new material that proved Viveka Babajee and Gautam Vora were in a romantic relationship. (SUPPLIED)

New evidence shows that Viveka Babajee’s former boyfriend lied about the status of his relationship with her, the family’s spokesman, Dale Bhagwagar, said in a media statement issued today, asking that the friend, Gautam Vora, turn himself in to the police.

Babajee’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at the Western Mumbai apartment she lived alone in.

It was only discovered when worried neighbours reportedly rang the police because Babajee did not answer her doorbell and a smell of gas was emanating from her apartment.

“Because of the material records available in the said matter, and after scrutinizing the statements made by Gautam Vora, as is appearing in the media reports, it largely appears that Gautam Vora is hiding the truth, for reasons best known to him,” Bhagwagar said in the statement.

“Therefore, the Babajee family requests Gautam Vora to immediately approach the police and come out with all the truth about Viveka. Without further delay, they also want Gautam Vora to confess to the police about what exactly happened in the last meeting on the night before the incident, because from his behaviour, it seems that there is much more than what meets the eye. The Babajee family wants Gautam Vora to come up with the truth and nothing but the truth, about the death of Viveka Babajee.”

Vora, a 32-year-old stockbroker who lives with his widowed mother and brother in Mumbai’s upscale Nepean Sea Road, has thus far denied the two were more than just good friends.

OBSCENE PHOTOS

But Bhagwagar said the family worked with Babajee’s technical advisor to access her Gmail and Facebook accounts, which he said proved that the two were more than just friends.

“Apart from various emails which indicate that Gautam Vora was madly in love with Viveka, there is also photographic evidence which further signifies their relationship as a couple in love.

“The Babajee family feels that this new evidence, which they have managed to procure from Viveka’s Gmail and Facebook accounts, should leave no doubt that Gautam had lied and misguided, both the Police and the media, about the nature of his relationship with Viveka, while spreading the ‘depression theory’ after her death,” Bhagwagar’s statement said.

He said the family also found “shocking obscene photographs” that Vora had sent Babajee from his BlackBerry.

“But since these photographs are disgustingly pornographic in nature, we haven’t made them public,” he said.

“Because of the material records available in the said matter, and after scrutinizing the statements made by Gautam Vora, as is appearing in the media reports, it largely appears that Gautam Vora is hiding the truth, for reasons best known to him.”

FERTILITY TESTS

The Babajees say Viveka had agreed to marry her friend Gautam Vora before she committed suicide last month.

Not only did the former Miss Mauritius had introduced Vora to her mother, Daywanti Babajee, during the course of a telephone call, but events were at such an advanced stage that the pair had compared horoscopes in what is a common Hindu custom ahead of marriage.

“According to her mother, Gautam had asked Viveka to go for a fertility test to see if she could bear him a baby and also that the couple had matched their horoscopes and were happy that most points, except one, had tallied,” Bhagwagar said.

Mrs Babajee, who has told the police that she was not aware of her daughter's reported suicide attempts in the past, talked of a planned marriage earlier this week, but Vora has consistently denied a serious relationship with the former Miss Mauritius.

CHEERFUL AND MOTIVATED

Both he and a friend, one Viren Shah, issued media denials that he was ever in a relationship with Babajee and that it was a prolonged depression that led her to take her life.

Vora has painted a picture of the suicide victim as a depressed woman who had “lost all hope of career prospects’’ and has cast himself as a counsellor.

Bhagwagar now says the family describe Viveka as being “very cheerful, motivated, courageous and inspiring” before her death.

Vora allegedly deleted his Facebook account and was reported untraceable when he realised Babajee’s suicide note named him and that police wanted to investigate the nature of the relationship.

Three days after her death, he filed an application for anticipatory bail, fearing that police would arrest him for helping Babajee commit suicide. Both suicide and its abetment are a crime in India.

POLICE STATEMENTS

Police said yesterday that they had recorded the statement of model Viveka Babajee’s mother Dayawanti.

“Further action in the case will be decided based on her statement,” the Indian Express newspaper quoted a police officer of suburban Mumbai police station in Khar as saying. He could not or would not reveal what she told them.

He also said the statements of other members of the Babajee family will be recorded in due course of time.

Viveka was found dead in her residence last Friday.

Following the incident, police had questioned South Mumbai businessman Gautam Vora and sent notices to director Rohit Jugraj and Kartik Jobanputra to report at the police station for questioning.

Police have apparently drawn up a list of around between 12 and 15 people for questioning, the newspaper said.
