Indian superstar Amitabh Bachchan is the latest celebrity victim of online abuse, who was forced to lodge a police complaint against an unknown blogger that has reportedly threatened the actor’s family.

Bachchan, 67, posted a note on his blog, Bigb.bigadda.com, highlighting the issue, along with raising questions about the cyber laws in India.

The harassment, which has been going on for months, finally came to head when the actor started receiving abusive text messages on his private cell phone, prompting him to involve Mumbai’s finest.

Acts of malice

On a recent blog entry, Bachchan posted: “There is a serious effort by a member that writes and comments on this blog to use language and expression that is abusive, filthy and utterly disgusting.

“I have brought this to the notice of the authorities and corrective measures to see none of the stuff that comes from this foul mouthed individual shall ever be allowed on this platform.

“Any further attempt from this person shall now be under legal cyber space action, now very prominently activated in this country.”

Bachchan went on to add that the individual has also been sending him “the most unprintable abuse on SMS on my phone.”

While the harassment has been going on for months, it has been deduced that the perpetrator is not a resident of India, which Bachchan highlighted by saying: “I have after great tolerance for many months now reported the matter to the police and they will be taking serious punitive action, not just in my country but in the country of the origin of these missives.”

Family under fire

It has been learned that not only Bachchan, but also his family, including his two grandchildren by daughter Shweta Nanda, have been targeted.

In his latest blog post, the actor added: “There is a limit to which this can be tolerated. I can be a gentleman up to a point. But beyond that I shall stop being one. You go to the level of so much as touching my family and little innocent grand children and you shall have to pay extremely dearly!! [sic]”

He has commented that the Commissioner of Police in Mumbai, along with other government authorities and members of the press – who the actor shares a love-hate relationship – have rallied around the family to show their support.

Celebrity online stalking

Bachchan’s case is one of many in recent months regarding celebrity stalking and hate mail.

Tween sensation Miley Cyrus was victimised by hate messages on her Twitter account, prompting her to quit the micro-blogging site earlier this year.

Bollywood’s Lara Dutta was also dealing with a Twitter stalker who would overload her account with hateful tweets, prompting the actress to take a hiatus from the site saying that such messages were simply unwarranted; albeit, she has returned, but is taking a more cautious approach to her account.

Meanwhile, Neil Nitin Mukesh, who’s film Lafangey Parindey is currently playing in UAE cinemas, found his twitter account hacked into.

The news was confirmed when Indian reel rag Filmfare's twitter account tweeted informing its followers, “Hey people! @NeilNMukesh’s account has been hacked! Kindly unfollow! We'll let you know when Neil is back in action on twitter!”
