A 26-year-old actress and model from the Philippines was crowned Miss Universe after host Steve Harvey mistakenly first announced that Miss Colombia had won the 64th edition of the pageant broadcast live on the Fox television network.

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was announced as runner-up to Miss Colombia, before Harvey announced to the audience that he had made a mistake.

Ariadna Gutierrez Arévalo, 21, of Sincelejo, Colombia, had already been crowned by Miss Universe of 2014, Paulina Vega of Barranquilla, Colombia, who was forced to remove the crown and give it to Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
Olivia Jordan, 27, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished third.

"I am so regretful," Harvey said on Twitter in an apology to the contestants from Colombia and the Philippines.

During the final question round when asked why she wanted to be Miss Universe, Wurtzbach replied that, "I will use my voice to influence the youth and I would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness that is timely and relevant to my country."

"I want to show the world, the universe rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart," she said.

In a separate Q&A round Miss Philippines was asked by the host, "Earlier this year, there was a controversy in the Philippines about the United States reopening of military base in your country. Do you think the United States should have a military presence in your country?"

The 26-year-old Pinay beauty queen answered: "I think that the United States and the Philippines have always had a good relationship with each other. We were colonized by the Americans and we have their culture and our traditions even up to this day and I think that we're very welcoming with the Americans. And I don't see any problem with that at all."

Pia won the Miss Universe Philippines title earlier this year, but her journey in the international pageant began years ago.

She joined the Binibining Pilipinas pageants in 2013 and 2014 before winning the top local title in 2015.
