Just a little over a month into their marriage and eight months away from their church wedding, comedienne, singer and box-office queen Ai-Ai de las Alas and her young husband Jed Salang are being rumoured to have split up.

Although she has kept mum over the issue, showbiz insiders have leaked information to entertainment scribes that the couple, who did have a civil wedding in the United States last month, had called it quits.

Besides, the tinsel town believes there’s truth to the rumour of De las Alas and Salang as being no longer together, as she herself hinted on her Instagram account on May 17, in reaction to a report by Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) on the same day.

“To all those who love me … reg PEP alert, please allow first my silence on this issue,” she said in Filipino. “I’ll be the one to talk once I am emotionally ready. Thanks for all your support and your love for me. God bless everyone.”

De las Alas, 48, and the 28-year-old Salang, earlier said they were going to have a church wedding in the Philippines on December 8, or more than eight months after their April 3 civil ceremony in Las Vegas.

Dubbed the ultimate ‘cougar’ of the Philippine entertainment industry for having a lover much, much younger than her, De las Alas has desperately denied before the public perennial rumours that she had been a victim of domestic violence.

“He can’t even hurt a fly,” she once said in one of her TV appearances, although in her signature tongue-in-cheek way of talking. “In fact, it’s me who gets physical on him some time.”

She had also referred to Salang, whom she introduced to her fans as a businessman, as someone whom God gave to her, thus their love for each other would help them survive any trials that might come their way.

“I believe that God gave him to me,” she said, brushing aside nasty comments she had received on the 20-year age gap between her and Salang. She stressed that age did not matter between two people who were deeply in love.

She had also said that her children from a previous relationship—Nicolo, Sancho and Sophia—were all supportive of her marriage with Salang, her erstwhile live-in partner.

Earlier reports said Salang had proposed to De las Alas last March 25, following a lovers’ quarrel that almost tore them apar. She went to the US right after the incident, in order to think things over.

“After all storms there is light,” she said afterwards. “We love each other. Love is bigger than the problem.”
