Last week, Miley Cyrus finally called it quits, not with fiancé Liam Hemsworth as many suspected, but rather with her legions of fans and critics in Twitterverse.

Albeit, her quitting spectacle didn't last very long.

The reason, to put it in the talented singer's own words, is: "I am so sick of Los Angeles. And sick of the lies that come with it. I didn't call off my wedding. Taking a break from social media. Draining."

The dramatic turn of events came amidst allegations that Hemsworth was caught cheating, followed by Cyrus herself being snapped in public a few days later, minus the rock on her finger.

But Cyrus' verbal outrage against the attack and "vicious lies" on her personal life, as she said in another interview, has been simply too much for the young star to handle of late.

However, Cyrus doesn't stand alone in her vent against the world of social media.

Last year, Grammy winner Adele also bid adieu to Twitterverse when her newborn son was the recipient of death threats online.

Meanwhile, Amanda Bynes' bizarre behaviour of late saw the one time starlet also part ways with Twitter when critics went on a rant when news broke she was to quit acting.

Across the globe in Bollywood, superstar Shah Rukh Khan has also come out in public to share his dismay against the verbal attacks he has received online.

His last tweet was on January 9 of this year, with the actor writing in a parting message on his Twitter account: "Sad I read so much judgements, jingoism, religious intolerance on the net and I use to think this platform will change narrowmindedness. But no! (sic)"

For those wondering, this tweet came on the heels of Khan's controversial interview in 'Outlook' magazine, which resulted in many extremists demanding the Muslim actor to quit India and cross the border into Pakistan; some even went ahead and branded him a traitor to his country.

Since, the 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' actor has maintained a media silence on his personal life, adding that he will only ever return to Twitter with the aid of a mediator or a manager to handle his tweets.

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan also has taken a hiatus from Twitterverse, choosing to maintain minimum updates via his Facebook account.

Reason being, the actor's account was allegedly hacked a few times and spammed.

His nephew Imran Khan, who earlier told Emirates 24/7: "I simply love Twitter; it's the perfect medium to interact with fans and make your point clear when nonsense is written about you," also quit after his acting abilities, or lack thereof, were brought to light after fans spammed his account.

This may be the reason why stars such as Saif Ali Khan and wife Kareena Kapoor stay away from Twitter.

Ask them and the duo is very upfront.

Said Khan: "I don't disagree that Twitter is a great marketing tool to promote a film, but personally, I don't feel the need to share any more details of my personal life with everyone.

"There should be a gap between fans and stars. We as celebs are here to do our job and that is that. I don't think we need to be answerable to anyone."

Wife Kapoor agrees, who added: "I am simply too busy with my career and personal life to take time out to interact on Twitter.

"I'm not here in Bollywood to make friends. I am here to work. That takes up all my time"
