A two-year-old boy was saved after swallowing nearly 60 iron vitamin tablets and doctors said the miraculous escape amounted to a “return from death,” the Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm' reported on Wednesday.

Nasser Yaslam was playing in the kitchen at their house in Dubai when he found a box containing medicine for the treatment of anaemia, the paper said.

He used his teeth to open the box and began swallowing the sweet tablets, which later caused him to vomit and collapse, it said, quoting his father.

“When Nasser was brought to hospital, he was close to death as the tablets caused a malfunction in most of his body organs,” said Dr Hala Al Ashi, a medical practitioner at Hatta hospital.

“Poison in his body was extremely high as the rate of iron in his blood reached 5,291 while the normal rate should not exceed 148.”

She said the boy was rushed later by helicopter to Al Wasl hospital, where doctors raced against time to bring him back to life.

“Doctors worked on the boy to clean his blood from iron and remove all effects of those tablets…his kidney resumed normal activity and the boy fully recovered after spending nearly 14 days in hospital and the intensive care unit…given the seriousness of his case, doctors considered Nasser returned from death.”

'Emarat Al Youm' quoted his father as saying Nasser had been discharged from hospital in good health. “He is back playing with his seven brothers in a good shape without any complications.”
