Kicking off a 40-day awareness campaign, Sharjah Police have urged residents to secure their valuables and houses before embarking on vacations.

Campaign is part of Sharjah Police’s efforts to curtail the annual summer menace, when families go on vacation leaving the houses with servants or not properly secured against theft or fire accidents, Khaleej Times reported.

Urging travellers to keep their jewellery, cash and other valuables in banks, Col Sultan Al Khayal, Head of the Moral Guidance Department at Sharjah Police said that people going on vacation should ensure that they do not leave servants at home or let them know about the valuables. “There are cases of servants stealing from the house with outside help when the employer is on vacation,” he informed.

Apart from theft, the campaign also focuses on fire accidents which are common during summer. People are advised to take precautionary measures like switching off the gas and all electrical and electronic devices to prevent fire accidents before leaving the houses.

Awareness campaign organised by the Sharjah Police, set to begin Tuesday, will educate families on the precautionary measures to be taken to prevent thefts and fire accidents during summer vacations.

As thousands of vacationers, mostly Levant natives, drive to their destination, the campaign will also focus on road safety.

The campaign, which will be on till the end of August, will educate travellers on securing children in car seats and to wearing seat belts. Currently, as part of the tyre inspection campaign, vehicles are being checked to ensure the safety of travellers.

Fliers are being distributed at checkpoints and gas stations with advice and safety tips for motorists. “The major causes of accidents are faulty tyres, failure to abide by traffic rules and negligence in taking safety measures while travelling by land,” Col Al Khayal noted.
