Cheapest (and costliest) countries for air travel

Published

India and Malaysia are the cheapest countries in the world for flights, while the most expensive is Finland, followed by Switzerland, according to a survey by Berlin-based travel search website GoEuro.

The study considered 51 countries across five continents to work out the average price to travel per 100 kilometres by plane, train and bus, reported Daily Mail.

According to the survey results, India came up trumps costing just $10.36 [Dh38; £6.28] on average to travel 100 kilometres on a commercial flight. In fact, travelling by flights in the Subcontinent is cheaper than travelling by train or bus.

A 100-km train journey costs $15.98 [Dh59; £9.60] and a similar bus journey will cost $6.17 [Dh22; £3.70], the survey reveals.

Malaysia closely follows India with an average cost of $12.27 to fly 100km. South Africa comes third on the cheapest air travel list at $12.48 and Australia at number four costing $13.09 for the same distance. Spain takes the fifth position.

Expensive flights

On the contrary, Finland followed closely by Switzerland are the most expensive countries costing an average of $39.84 [Dh146.3]and $38.28 [Dh141] respectively to travel 100km, the survey reveals. Lithuania, Austria and Estonia take the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.

The UK is the 22nd cheapest country to travel in using all three forms of transport – plane, train, bus - making it cheaper than most West European countries apart from Spain as well as the US and India.
