Police have rescued an 11-year-old autistic boy who had spent four nights alone and lost in a dense Australian forest.

Police Commander Rick Nugent says Luke Shambrook was spotted from a police helicopter before noon Tuesday in the Fraser National Park in Victoria state 3 kilometres (2 miles) from his family's campground where he disappeared from on Friday morning.

Nugent told reporters the boy was exhausted, dehydrated and suffering hypothermia, but was otherwise well.

Nugent says paramedics are assessing the boy.

His parents were overwhelmed

More than 120 searchers have combed the dense scrubland since Friday morning.

Temperatures fell below 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit) during the nights and there had been some rain.
