As many as 26 beggars, both men and women, have been arrested since the beginning of a campaign to combat begging in the emirate.

The campaign launched by Tourism Security Department at the Dubai Police aims at rooting out the practice which is discouraged by Islam and banned by the law of the land.

The begging activity increases as the month of Ramadan approaches, with beggars trying to take advantage of the Holy period and the religious sentiments of the people.

Colonel Mohammed Rashid Abdullah Al Muhairi, Director of Tourism Security said that most beggars were caught red-handed at the mosques, near cooperative societies and petrol stations.

He said almost all of those arrested were on visit visas and especially entered the country to beg during Ramadan.
