As many as 84 people died in traffic accident in the first eight months in Dubai, compared to 115 in the same period last year, witnessing a 27 per cent decline.

According to Dubai Police statistics, the casualties are a result of 853 accidents this year, compared to 888 in 2010.

Authorities believe that the rate of decline in accidents and related casualties indicate that Dubai’s target to achieve zero death in accidents by 2020, could be achieved a year ahead.

If achieved the figure would place Dubai ahead of the Scandinavian countries which currently have the safest roads in the world, with accident death rates ranging between three and four per hundred thousand population.

The stats also revealed that child deaths in road accidents also came down this year, as four lost their lives compared to six in 2010.

Among the deadliest roads, Emirates Road tops the list followed closely by Dubai Bypass Road, Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.

Between January and August, five people died in 19 accidents that occurred on Emirates Road, while eight lost their lives in 26 accidents that took place on Dubai Bypass road.

Number of deaths on Sheikh Zayed road and Al Khail road equaled at four each, in 72 and 30 accidents respectively.
