739 outlets fined for poor food quality

Penalising the poor hygiene standards, 739 shops and food outlets were fined by the Food Control Department of Dubai Municipality in the first half of 2011.

The inspectors destroyed 19,300 kg of fish, meat and fruit that were not fit for human consumption as they made 4,449 visits to food outlets, restaurants, markets, retailers, manufacturers etc.

Sultan Ali Al Taher, acting head of the department of food control at the Dubai Municipality stressed though the number of violations was slightly higher, 94 per cent of the establishments met with high standards of hygiene.

He pointed out that the adherence to hygiene standards has improved in the first quarter this year as against the same period last year which saw adherence at 91 per cent.

Al Tahir informed that the department received 142 complaints in the first quarter while it rose to 339 in the second.
