95 deaths due to road mishaps this year

Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin Director General, Traffic Police Department, Dubai, expects the number of road deaths in the emirate to be less than 130 cases in 2011.

This is compared with 153 deaths in 2010.

Speaking to 'Emirates24|7' he said, “The statistics confirm the success of the strategy of Dubai Traffic Police, which aims to take the mortality rate of traffic accidents to zero per 100,000 inhabitants.

Latest statistics show that the number of road deaths in the emirate during the past nine months is 95, compared to 122 during the corresponding period for last year.

Also the number of injuries due to car accidents (severe, moderate, minor) witnessed a decline to be 1,381 compared to 1,442 cases during the same period last year.

Driving under the influence of alcohol caused the death of 11 people and injured 156.

The Dubai traffic police is taking part in a campaign called the ‘Atahad’ organised by Arabic daily 'Emarat Al Youm', to stop the use of mobile phone while driving.
